Manage your feelings
Manage Your Feelings.
We should work daily to improve & develop ourselves. We spent so much energy trying to change people's opinions about us. Constantly arguing and defending ourselves about how we are being perceived. And these distractions make us lose focus on our assignments and purpose in life.
Emotional intelligence is being able to understand and manage your own personal emotions as well as doing the same for other people’s emotions.
There are three skills which are attributed to being emotionally aware:
Being emotionally self-aware
Being able to grasp the emotions that you are feeling and apply them
Being motivated and having a positive mental attitude
Having empathy for others
Interacting with people: social skills
Now let’s take a deeper look at each of these levels of emotional intelligence and see how achieving them can make you feel better.
Being emotionally self-aware
When you have a change of emotion, can you recognize it in yourself? Or does it take others to tell you how you are acting. Your answer to this question is quite revealing on the subject of your emotional intelligence. If you can, you have achieved the first level of emotional intelligence. If you cannot, you should try to look deeper into your feelings and when or why you encounter hem. This can take time but keeping notes about your emotions can help you to notice patterns.
This is the first level of emotional intelligence because you can only help yourself and others if you first understand yourself and your emotions.
2. Being able to grasp the emotions that you are feeling and apply them
The next step builds upon the first because once you have understood the emotions that you are experiencing, you can work on being able to apply them to your everyday life. Perhaps you will be able to harness a feeling of social anxiety and ensure that this does not disrupt your day. You can also use your emotions to change how adaptable you are to situations changing or how you interact with others. These are positive changes and although they may not feel natural at first, they will have a good impact on your life and those around you.
3. Being motivated and having a positive mental attitude
Using the emotional awareness and application techniques that you have at this point, you should be able to understand how you can achieve a positive mindset. By applying the feelings of positivity, happiness and effort, you will invoke motivation and a sense of self. This can help you at work if you have a complicated deadline and need to power through or while exercising for example to help you reach a new personal best. This can even help you to meet new people and find new friends with common interests. All of which, will have a positive impact on your life and will help you to feel better.
4. Having empathy for others
Once you have gained a sense of your own emotions and how to manage them, it is important to be able to understand the same in others. This is obviously different to your own emotional intelligence as nobody feels or thinks in the same way. This can help to avoid misunderstandings amongst family or friends and even help you to anticipate other people’s needs in a working or social environment. This makes it easier for other people to have empathy with you in return. Trying to be aware of other people’s feelings can have a very positive effect on your own feelings about yourself. This can result in having a greater social understanding and feeling more positive.
5. Interacting with people: social skills
The last one on the list: being able to interact with people. This is vital as it applies all of the above skills. If you fully understand your own emotions and how to apply them as well as other people’s emotions and how they apply them, themselves, then you can interact with others on an empathetic level.
This can make you more satisfied as it means that you can form true and lasting bonds while also understanding people’s tones and not assuming the meaning behind what they say. For introverted personalities who finding interacting with others more difficult, commanding these skills can make it easier to socialize and talk to people.
Emotional intelligence is equally important as IQ in many ways. Being able to support yourself emotionally as well as others can improve your performance and well-being while also giving back to others. Paying attention to your emotions and utilizing the above points will ensure you are more aware of emotional intelligence and this can have a hugely positive impact on you as an individual.
